The average spending per pupil in New Jersey schools this year is $13,835, a 4.3 percent increase over 2008-2009, according to the State of New Jersey Comparative Spending Guide. The guide lists the average spending statewide for every school district, broken down into more than a dozen categories for instruction, administration and extracurricular. New Jersey spending on education spans a wide range, as do the types of school systems. At $9,999, Elmwood Park has the lowest spending of K-12 districts. Asbury Park has the highest, at $24,306. Comparing K-6 district spending, Swedesboro-Woolwich in Gloucester County is lowest at $9,366; West Cape May Boro is highest at $24,117. The lowest K-8 district spending is $9,598 for East Newark Boro in Hudson County; Avalon is highest at $35,882. Among charter schools, the Classical Academy of Clifton is lowest at $7,696; Englewood on the Palisades is highest at $18,427.
