Leading Democrat Adamant There’s Going to Be No Government Shutdown

‘As much as people would love to see’ governor and Democrats in Legislature fail to agree a budget, Sen. Sarlo says it’s not going to happen

Talk of a government shutdown over the possible failure of Gov. Phil Murphy to agree a budget with Democrats in the Legislature is just that — talk, according to a senior Democratic voice on budgetary matters.

“We are not going to shut government down, as much as people would love to see Democrats in the Legislature and the governor’s office shut government down,” said Sen. Paul Sarlo, who chairs the Budget and Appropriations Committee.

“As budget chair, I’m going to do everything I can possibly do to deliver a balanced budget, like we do every year, without having to relive what happened last year,” Sarlo (D-Bergen) added.

Talk about a possible shutdown had ratcheted up when Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin recently said he didn’t support the governor’s plan to increase the state’s sales tax. Fuel was added to the fire when Senate President Steve Sweeney said he supported the Coughlin approach.
