Disappointed Mayor Ras Baraka vows to appeal ‘setback to criminal justice reform’

A Superior Court judge dealt a blow yesterday to civilian oversight of police misconduct in Newark when he stripped the city's Civilian Complaint Review Board of its ability to subpoena or investigate police.

Promising to appeal, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement that Judge Donald Kessler’s decision was “a setback to criminal justice reform in America and to the critical need for citizens to have complete trust that incidents of police misconduct will be dealt with fairly, appropriately and impartially.”
