New Jersey drivers are the third safest in the nation, according to a new report by an auto insurance website. ranked the 50 states and the District of Columbia on five measures using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The categories were the total number of traffic deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, the number of fatalities involving the failure to use seatbelts or driving without a license, the number of deaths due to drunk driving, the number of fatalities in which speed was a factor, and the number of pedestrians and bicyclists killed per 100,000 residents.

Based on these factors, New Jersey ranked the third safest in the nation, which was six places better than in 2016. Only Iowa and Minnesota were considered safer. The least safe state was Montana.
