Murphy Grilled on Ability to Deal with Terror Attacks

Frontrunner in governor’s race says public safety must take precedence over politics

Phil Murphy, the Democratic frontrunner in the New Jersey governor’s race, visited the Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC yesterday and, straight out of the box, was grilled on his capability to deal with a terrorist attack like the one that hit downtown Manhattan on Tuesday.

“Why isn’t Ms. Guadagno better prepared to prevent these kinds of attacks than you are?” Lehrer asked, pointing out that Murphy’s main opponent, Republican Kim Guadagno, is a former sheriff and prosecutor while Murphy was a Goldman Sachs’ executive and U.S. ambassador to Germany.

“I don’t think there’s any reason to politicize it in any way,” Murphy said. “At every stage along the way, public safety has to be ahead of politics; this is no time for politics. This is time for grieving, to take care of the victims, to figure out how the heck this happened … and do everything we can to prevent a similar attack from occurring again,” he said. Murphy also suggested that the complex issues he dealt with as ambassador gave him the kind of experience that would be applicable in dealing with events such as Tuesday’s terror attack.
