The American Federation of Teachers yesterday endorsed Senate President Steve Sweeney’s bid for re-election, putting it at odds with the New Jersey Education Association, the state’s largest teachers’ union. “This guy is a working-class stiff. He’s an iron worker. And if you look at his entire record … this is a guy who walks the walk with working people,” said AFT president Randi Weingarten.
The NJEA, which is backing Republican Fran Grenier and is spending big in a bid to oust Sweeney (D-Gloucester), says its war on him is rooted in the contentious issue of funding for public pensions. “He has not fully funded that pension the entire eight years he’s been here despite promises that he would do this and do that. He has not fulfilled that,” said NJEA president Marie Blistan.
