Many Immigrants with No Criminal Records Being Arrested in NJ
ICE is supposed to be focused on removing immigrants convicted of crimes, but that does not seem to be the case in New Jersey
Immigrant advocates are especially concerned about a trend in arrests in New Jersey between January and the end of May this year. Whereas 25 percent of immigrants who were arrested in New York in that period had no criminal convictions, in New Jersey, 44 percent of the 1,395 immigrants who were arrested had no criminal convictions. (During the same period in 2016, 24 percent of immigrants arrested in New Jersey had no criminal convictions.)
"I think the narrative that criminals are the priority isn’t real," Johanna Calle, program coordinator for the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice, said.
