Most of Tuesday’s session dealt with port security in the Dominican Republic. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) is accused of trying to intervene with the state department on behalf of his friend Dr. Salomon Melgen.
Melgen invested millions in a company that had a contract to scan cargo leaving and arriving at the port, but it was never enforced and was becoming worthless. Menendez met with an assistant secretary of state and sent a forceful email threatening to hold a hearing. But Menendez’s lawyer argues that the senator was concerned with overall port security.
In the final hour Tuesday, federal prosecutors presented evidence about Medical overbilling; Melgen was convicted of Medicaid fraud earlier this year, but the judge would not let the prosecution continue with this line of questioning.
