Frelinghuysen Says He’s Got Clout and It’s Good for New Jersey

Congressman’s critics dispute his record, say his promotion of Republican agenda is damaging to Garden State

Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11th), says his chairmanship of the House appropriations committee allows him to do a lot that benefits New Jersey. As an example of his clout, he points to $900 million in funding for the construction of a new train tunnel under the Hudson River that was included in the recent House spending bill.

But critics contend that Frelinghuysen’s responsibility to Republican priorities means that, while he might give to New Jersey with one hand, he takes away with another. They point to the spending bill’s 3.5 percent cut in the federal Department of Education budget as an example.
