Steve Rogers

PR17-Rogers

A Nutley commissioner, Rogers is a retired police officer and married father of three.

Born in 1951, Rogers served in the Air Force from 1970 to 1974, discharged at the rank of sergeant. In the 1980s, he enlisted in the Naval Reserves and served with the Office of Naval Intelligence until retiring in 2004 as a lieutenant commander.

He became an East Orange police officer in 1974 and two years later joined the Nutley force, retiring in 2011 at the rank of detective lieutenant. He made news in the 1990s when he wrote himself a ticket for illegal parking after he pulled over to help a woman with groceries, then left his car parked too close to the corner while he got something to eat at a diner and received a call from headquarters about a car — his — parked illegally.

Rogers received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from William Paterson University in 1986.

He served on the Nutley school board before his election to the board of commissioners in 2012. Rogers was re-elected last year. As a commissioner, he established the first municipal military and veterans affairs bureau in New Jersey.

Rogers wrote two books on community policing and has appeared as a guest commentator on FOX News.
