The 2nd District encompasses 17 communities in Atlantic County: Absecon, Atlantic City, Brigantine, Buena, Buena Vista, Egg Harbor City, Egg Harbor Township, Folsom, Hamilton, Linwood, Longport, Margate City, Mullica, Northfield, Pleasantville, Somers Point, and Ventnor City.
Voter registration is 34 percent Democrat and 24 percent Republican; most of the rest are unaffiliated.
This is one of the few districts in the state with representation split between the parties, with a Democratic senator and one Assembly member and one Republican Assemblyman. It is also one of several districts that will get new representation as incumbent Democratic Sen. Jim Whelan is not seeking re-election. Trying for his seat is current GOP Assemblyman Chris Brown. Vincent Mazzeo, a Democrat, is the other Assemblyman.
The Democrat looking to replace Whelan is Colin Bell, a Margate man who was unsuccessful at an Assembly bid two years go. There’s a big battle for two Democratic Assembly spots: Mazzeo is paired with John Amato of Buena, and also having filed are James Carney of Northfield, Rizwan Malik of Atlantic City, Theresa D. Watts of Absecon, and Ernest D. Coursey of Atlantic City. Vince Sera of Brigantine and Brenda Taube of Margate filed for the Assembly seats on the Republican side.
