‘Pink-Collar’ Jobs Among The Fastest-Growing In NJ And Other States

Expert says nursing, childcare, and home healthcare have one big advantage — they cannot be moved overseas

In New Jersey, as in many other states, the fastest-growing jobs tend to be those traditionally dominated by women. Many are in the healthcare field like nursing and home healthcare and others include child care and restaurant work.

Mary Gatta, a sociologist at the City University of New York, said these “pink-collar” jobs have one big advantage — they cannot be outsourced to other countries, and job security is high. But they often come with low pay and limited benefits.

Gina Miranda Diaz, president of the New Jersey chapter of the Hispanic Nurses Association, said nursing takes a lot of training, usually three to four years of education. Experts suggest men may be attracted to the field if they see the skills involved.
