Booker: Senate Will Be ‘Emergency Brake’ for Trump Administration

New Jersey senator reacts quickly to president-elect’s choices for national security, chief strategist

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) wasted no time speaking out against President-elect Donald Trump’s choice of a trio of hardliners for top national security posts last week. The same is true of Trump’s naming of Steve Bannon as his chief strategist and senior counselor. Bannon is the former head of Breitbart News, a platform for racist and sexist views.

“Some have degraded and demeaned Americans,” Booker posted to his Facebook page, “Still more have threatened Americans' rights, and attacked the privileges of citizenship.”

“In many ways, the Senate will be the emergency brake trying to stop a train that Trump might want to run off the tracks,” Booker said in an interview with WNYC’s Jami Floyd.

He added that he’s willing to fight to defend American values.
