Work To Begin On Beachfront Luxury Condos In Long Branch

The Jersey Shore city appears to be making slow progress on 20-year-old comeback

A beachfront complex of million-dollar condos could be the next step in the slow redevelopment of Long Branch, one of the oldest resorts on the Jersey Shore. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held Wednesday, to be followed soon by the beginning of construction.

Mimi and Edwin Feliciano of Fem South Beach Urban Renewal LLC said they went to Miami to get ideas for the design and expertise on hurricane-proofing waterfront buildings. Edwin Feliciano said the couple has long had a dream of “bringing resort living” to New Jersey.

The city, which adopted a development plan 20 years ago, has also hired a design company for a New York ferry and announced plans to revitalize the downtown Broadway neighborhood. Local residents say the oceanfront area has already made a comeback, with one woman calling the boardwalk “fabulous.”

The Felicianos say they spent several years working with local officials on their project. One thing they avoided was using eminent domain to get a site, to allay fears that year-round residents would be driven out by the most expensive housing on the boardwalk.
