How prevalent is bullying in New Jersey’s schools? According to a recent report from Status of Women in the States, nearly 24 percent (23.9 percent) of female students in 9th to 12th grade said they’d been harassed or bullied at school. (The figures are from 2013, the most recent year available.) Almost 19 percent (18.8 percent) of their male counterparts indicated they’d been bullied. And harassment no longer has to take place face to face, one of the downsides of the rise of digital culture. Twenty percent of female students reported being bullied electronically, virtually twice as many as male students. Finally, 4.4 percent of female students said they’d missed at least one day of school in the past month because they felt unsafe, compared with 7.1 percent of male students.
