Segment on ‘60 Minutes’ Turns Spotlight on Success of St. Benedict’s Prep

Headmaster of parochial high school in Newark talks about why focus on students’ hearts and souls leads to academic achievement

Newark’s St. Benedict’s Prep was featured last night on “60 Minutes,” presented as an urban education success story -- and no wonder.

The school has a 98 percent graduation rate and 85 percent rate of graduates who gain a college degree.

The headmaster of St. Benedict’s, Father Ed Leahy, was a featured speaker at the NJ Spotlight on Cities conference last fall.

Leahy believes that the key to the all-boys school’s success is fostering students’ heart and spirit even before their intellects. From that, he believes, academic success will follow.

In this segment, we hear from Leahy and his charges about what has worked in his approach -- and sometimes hasn’t.
