Painted topless ladies . . . ?

While we're on winter hiatus we'll be regularly posting episodes from this compelling podcast on breast cancer, as well as those from our October conference NJ Spotlight on Cities.

Boobs were very much in the news the past two weeks in New York City, what with painted topless ladies posing with tourists in Times Square, the mayor’s overreaction and GoTopless.org’s Pride Parade from Columbus Circle to Bryant Park last Sunday.

Boobs were also very much on my mind as I’d had my originals surgically removed earlier in the month. It’s hard to forget your boobs when you’re packing a breast tissue expander, which feels very much like having a tight underwire bra inside your body 24 hours a day.

On the other hand, I did find myself enjoying suggestions that, with my suddenly downsized breasts, I was looking more svelte.

Debbie Galant is the publisher of Midcentury Modern Magazine, a magazine about age, identity, and generational politics that lives on Medium.com. She is also the co-producer (with her 23-year-old son Noah Levinson) of a podcast called The Chemo Files, about having breast cancer. By day, she explores the future of news as Associate Director of the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University. Galant is also a former New York Times columnist, the author of three novels, and the founder of Baristanet, one of the first hyperlocal news sites in the country.
