Podcast: New Jersey Urban Mayors -- The New Generation
What are the ingredients for a successful city? Three mayors have their say
While we're on winter hiatus we'll be publishing podcasts of some of the most compelling and challenging sessions from our October NJ Spotlight On Cities conference, as well as aof a colleague who is struggling with breast cancer.
NJ Spotlight on Cities in October ended with a panel featuring three mayors who have recently taken over the top elected post in their cities. Mayor Ras Baraka of Newark, Eric Jackson of Trenton, and Adrian O. Mapp of Plainfield all run cities that are quite different in terms of size and demographics, yet there were recurring themes as each took some time to talk about their priorities. NJ Spotlight’s own Editor In Chief, Lee Keough, moderated this panel.
From their feelings on mayoral control of public schools (spoiler alert: two liked the idea, but one did not) to policy and funding issues that impact them on a daily basis, the discussion was lively, spirited and even sparked a good deal of laughter. We also video-record this session, if you’d like to.
Our mayors’ panel was one of a dozen panels at this year’s inaugural NJ Spotlight On Cities. Now we’re gearing up for our second year, to be held in the fall. What are the big issues facing cities that we should be focusing on? Do you know of an organization that’s doing wonderful things in a New Jersey city? Or an idea that’s taken root in another American city that New Jersey might try? Or a speaker that we absolutely should know about? Tell us about it by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
