Christie Makes First Debate

Matt Katz | August 5, 2015

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has passed his first major test as a Republican presidential candidate. He qualified, just barely, for the first debate of the 2016 race.

With 17 Republican candidates, Fox News, the host of the first debate, is limiting those on the stage Thursday to the top 10 candidates in the polls.

Once a frontrunner since announcing his candidacy in June, Christie has failed to gain much traction, polling around three percent nationally. But Christie remained confident in recent weeks that he'd get on the stage. And sure enough, he made the cut, winning the ninth slot.

The debate is an important opportunity for Christie, known for his quickness in front of the microphone, to reclaim supporters.
