Christie's overseas travel funded by firms that do business with N.J.

A non-profit organization created to promote business and job growth in New Jersey is funding Governor Christie’s trip to England this week with backing from some of the state’s largest public utilities, labor unions, law firms and contractors — some that have received multimillion-dollar contracts and tax breaks from the state.

But the trip was marred by confused locals, canceled press availabilities, and bad headlines that left the governor's brand battered and bruised.

University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato lists Christie as one of the top four candidates, along with Paul, Jeb Bush and Scott Walker. And the betting market BetFair had Christie as the fourth most likely as of midmorning Tuesday.

When the Chris Christie-for-president chatter first started, in 2011, voters in his home state of New Jersey took pride in having a celebrity governor. As Nancy Reagan escorted Mr. Christie to his speech at her husband’s presidential library, and hedge fund billionaires, The Weekly Standard and The Wall Street Journal’s editorial pages urged him to run, his approval ratings jumped. Voters told pollsters the national attention made him more effective, and improved their state’s long-maligned image.
