NJ Spotlight Editorial Staff Continues to Grow with Award-Winning New Hire

Veteran reporter and editor to cover budget and public finance for state’s leading source of news about politics and public policy

Award-winning reporter and writer John Reitmeyer this week joins the reporting staff of the state’s premier public-policy news source, NJ Spotlight.

Reitmeyer will cover the budget and public-finance beat for NJ Spotlight, building upon the strong work he delivered in his previous position with The Record of Bergen County.

“John’s arrival helps NJ Spotlight sustain a tradition of providing comprehensive coverage of issues that have lasting impact,” said John Mooney, founding editor of NJ Spotlight. “He brings with him the institutional knowledge and insight that is so critical to NJ Spotlight’s brand of in-depth journalism.”

“John’s expertise will help New Jerseyans better understand a complicated and under-scrutinized subject that impacts every resident in the state,” added Managing Editor Lee Keough.

At The Record, Reitmeyer focused on public finance, including state budget, tax policy, the pension system, campaign finance, and the Transportation Trust Fund. He was part of the team covering New Jersey’s governor, Legislature and Supreme Court.

Prior to the Record, Reitmeyer worked at The Burlington County Times and The Press of Atlantic City. Earlier this year, he was named one of the best state political reporters in the country by The Washington Post’s The Fix blog. PolitickerNJ cited him for “meticulous research” in their 2014 “Year in Review” and he has won numerous New Jersey Press Association Awards for public service journalism and responsible journalism.

Reitmeyer can be reached at jreitmeyer@njspotlight.com. He is also on Twitter at @johnreitmeyer.

NJ Spotlight was launched in May 2010, supported by grants from the Community Foundation of New Jersey, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, William Penn Foundation, and Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. The organization uses a blended business model that combines foundation support with advertising, sponsorships, and custom products. Other foundations supporting NJ Spotlight include The Fund for New Jersey, Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation, the Wyncote Foundation, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Partners for Health, The Schumann Fund for New Jersey, and The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey.

In addition to daily news coverage, NJ Spotlight hosts live and online events with key stakeholders on issues such as the state budget, healthcare reform, solar power, charter schools, teacher tenure, and clean energy. Further information is at www.njspotlight.com.
