Lawmakers Lobby Obama to Resist Calls to Shut Down Longtime NJ Military Base

Menendez cites ‘strategic importance’ of facility as president addresses troops at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst

President Obama’s visit yesterday to New Jersey included a stop at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst for what was described as a chance for him to thank the members of the U.S. military for their service.

But for Garden State lawmakers who greeted the president when he arrived in New Jersey and accompanied him back to Washington, it was also a chance to lobby for the importance of not shutting down the long-term military base, which has been the target of some congressional budget-cutters who want to phase out some operations based at the installation.

Noting that the facility is “is the only tri-service base in the entire country,” Democratic U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez touted “the strategic importance of the base in terms of our national security.”
