Podcast: The Inside Story on How State Mishandled Sandy Relief Funds
NJ Spotlight’s Scott Gurian talks about his probe of faulty formula used to distribute state grants
Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer didn’t mince words: “The mistakes that were made would never have been rectified if it weren’t for the investigative journalism of NJ Spotlight.”
Zimmer was referring to a series of articles written by Scott Gurian about the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program Energy Allocation Initiative. Working in conjunction with WNYC/NJPR, partners of NJ Spotlight, Gurian conducted an in-depth probe into the Sandy energy grant program and found it littered with errors. His investigation concluded that several cities affected by Hurricane Sandy were shortchanged by hundreds of thousands of dollars in relief funding.
Now, the state has announced that dozens of municipalities will receive additional funding, and those who received too much will see reductions, all thanks to Gurian’s investigative reporting.
Listen to an in-depth.
