2014 Voter Guide: District 2

New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District covers Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem counties, as well as parts of Burlington, Gloucester, and Ocean.

Republican Rep. Frank LoBiando has represented the district since 1995 and is seeking reelection. His Democratic opponent is William Hughes Jr., the son of the man who preceded LoBiondo in office. There are four independents on the ballot, as well: Bayode Olabisi; Costantino Rozzo, of the American Labor Party; Alexander H. Spano, of the Democratic-Republican Party; and Gary Stein, a frequent candidate.

This district, which was blue until the senior William Hughes retired, is something of an anomaly. About a quarter of voters are registered Republicans while slightly more -- 27.2 percent -- are registered as Democrats. The district chose President Obama in 2012 and 2008, but also reelected LoBiondo. The large number of unaffiliated voters and the fact LoBiondo has won with comfortable margins would seem to color District 2 red again, but a poll last week from Stockton College showed LoBiondo leading Hughes by only 6 points.
