2014 Voter Guide: District 1
One of the most prominent races this year is in the 1st Congressional District in South Jersey, which includes the city of Camden and its suburbs, as well as portions of Burlington and Gloucester counties. The seat is currently open, following the resignation last February of Democratic Rep. Rob Andrews.
This is one of three races in the state with seven candidates on the ballot. The Democratic candidate is state Sen. Donald Norcross, while the Republicans nominated former football player Garry Cobb. The independents, and their party or slogan are: Mike Berman, Of the People; Margaret M. Chapman, Change is Needed; Donald E. Letton, Democratic-Republican Party; Robert Shapiro, Stop Boss Politics; and Scot John Tomaszewski, We Deserve Better.
This is prime blue territory: More than 40 percent of residents are registered as Democrats, while only 14 percent are Republicans. Despite being under investigation for campaign-spending irregularities, Andrews won two years ago with 68 percent of the vote. And a Democrat has represented the district for the past 39 years.
