Few would disagree: This winter has been miserable. January was 5 degrees below the 1981-2010 normal range, according to New Jersey state climatologist David Robinson

Although by the end of January, the winter as a whole has ranked in the normal -- if not dry -- range, January was a wet month. Snowfall averaged 17.7 inches, 10.6 inches above normal. It ranks as the eighth snowiest on record.

One of the interesting things about this winter, however, is how the temperature has fluctuated wildly -- and that may be contributing to feelings of despair among residents. In January, there were 11 days in which the temperature exceed 50 degrees. There were 12 days in New Jersey when the temperature fell below zero degrees.
