The List: Best-Compensated Nonprofit Hospital Executives

Top salaries approach $4 million for leaders of biggest healthcare systems in NJ

The growth and consolidation of New Jersey’s healthcare systems has contributed toward rising salaries for the state’s top hospital executives.

While there are officials based at southern and central New Jersey hospitals, this list is heavily weighted toward the state’s densely populated northeast corner. It also includes three Barnabas Health System executives, as well as all three New Jersey chief executive whose systems joined the seven-system AllSpire Health Partners.

The list is drawn from the 990 forms required for all nonprofits. The most recently available filings are from 2011.

1. $3,698,892 -- Mark D. Pilla, executive VP of operations, Barnabas Health; president and CEO (retired), Community Medical Center, Toms River

Interestingly, the highest-paid executive in 2011 was not the top leader in his respective system. Pilla’s compensation package reflected both retirement pay and deferred compensation “in recognition of his 30-year career” in healthcare, according to Barnabas spokeswoman Carrie Cristello.

2. $3,541,964 – Joseph Trunfio, president and CEO, Atlantic Health System

Trunfio could make a legitimate claim to the top spot, considering his compensation doesn’t include any retirement pay. He continues to oversee a growing system, adding Chilton Memorial Hospital to Morristown, Overlook and Newton medical centers. He also joined his system to AllSpire, which is designed to spread best practices rapidly across its seven systems.

3. $2,954,047 – Ronald J. Del Mauro, CEO (retired), Barnabas Health

For Del Mauro, 2011 was his last year at the helm of the Livingston-based hospital giant. He handed over the reins to the ninth-ranked executive on this list.

4. $2,412,452 -- Richard P. Miller, CEO, Virtua (now president as well)

While Miller may not get the same public attention as George Norcross – chairman of rival Cooper – he continues to lead South Jersey’s largest system, with hospitals in Voorhees, Mount Holly, Marlton and Berlin.

5. $2,381,832 – Robert C. Garrett, president and CEO, Hackensack University Medical Center

Every year, Hackensack leads the state in the number of patients served by one hospital. Since 2011, Garrett managed to score a coup in reopening the Pascack Valley hospital. He also is one of the executives leading his system into the AllSpire alliance.

6. $2,228,661 – Al Maghazehe, president and CEO, Capital Health System

Magazehe leads one of the smallest systems on this list, but it’s one that pays its executives well. He’s presided over the opening of one of the most impressive new hospital buildings in the state in Hopewell Township.

7. $2,224,006 – John K. Lloyd, president and CEO, Meridian Health System

Meridian is the third of the AllSpire partners. Lloyd’s 2012 deal with Pennsylvania-based Geisinger makes his system a partner with one of the more closely watched health insurance companies in the country.

8. $1,988,369 – Audrey Meyers, president and CEO, Valley Health System

Valley remains one of the key hospitals serving Bergen County. Since 2013, Meyers has been working on plans to expand Valley Hospital, which is located in Ridgewood.

9. $1,971,051 – Barry Ostrowsky, president and chief operating officer, Barnabas Health (now CEO)

Now Barnabas’s head, Ostrowsky had already taken on the title of president in 2011. Like others on this list, Ostrowsky is constantly on the lookout for more opportunities to expand his already large system.

10. $1,823,701 – Ronald J. Guy, CFO (former), Capital Health System

Guy served as the CFO for Capital Health for many years, overseeing its finances as it built its new building. However, 2011 was his final year with the system.
