Situated along the Delaware River, the 6th District encompasses 15 communities straddling Burlington and Camden counties: Berlin Township, Cherry Hill, Collingswood, Gibbsboro, Haddon, Haddonfield, Hi-Nella, Maple Shade, Merchantville, Oaklyn, Pennsauken, Somerdale, Stratford, Tavistock and Voorhees.
This has been a solidly Democratic district, with almost 40 percent of those registering for the blue party while 15 percent are registered Republicans. The rest are not affiliated with any party.
All three Democratic incumbents are running again. Sen. James Beach of Voorhees is a property damage specialist who has served in the upper house since 2009. Assemblyman Louis D. Greenwald, who also lives in Voorhees, is currently the majority leader who is finishing his 18th year in the lower house and is an attorney. Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt of Cherry Hill is the general manager for conference and dining services at the University of Pennsylvania who is completing her fourth Assembly term.
Opposing Beach is Republican Sudhir Deshmukh of Voorhees. The GOP candidates for Assembly seats are Christine Leone-Zwillinger, of Cherry Hill, who ran unsuccessfully for Camden County sheriff last year, and George R. Fisher, of Haddonfield, whose name was placed on the ballot a little more than a month ago.
