2013 Voter Guide: District 36
District 36 encompasses 15 communities in Bergen and Passaic counties: Carlstadt, Cliffside Park, East Rutherford, Little Ferry, Lyndhurst, Moonachie, North Arlington, Passaic, Ridgefield, Ridgefield Park, Rutherford, South Hackensack, Teterboro, Wallington and Wood-Ridge.
Voter registration is 34 percent Democratic and 15 percent Republican, with most other voters declaring no party affiliation.
Running for re-election are three Democrats. First on the ticket is Sen. Paul Sarlo, mayor of Wood-Ridge, who was first elected to the Assembly in 2001 and joined the Senate two years later. Assemblyman Gary Schaer, a Passaic councilman, is an investment consultant who joined the lower house in 2006. Assemblywoman Marlene Caride is a lawyer completing her first term.
Opposing Sarlo is Republican Brian Fitzhenry, chairman of the North Arlington Board of Adjustment. The Republican challengers for the Assembly are Rosina Romano, owner of a title insurance agency in South Hackensack, and Foster Lowe, a former Little Ferry councilman, who manages residential and mixeduse properties in New York and New Jersey.
