District 34 includes four communities in Essex and Passaic counties: Clifton, East Orange, Montclair, and Orange.
Democrats are the plurality here, comprising almost half of all those registered. About 8 percent of voters are Republican and most of the rest have no party affiliation.
Three Democrats represent the district and are seeking re-election. Sen. Nia Gill of Montclair is an attorney who joined the Assembly in 1994 and moved up to the Senate 11 years ago. Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, finishing her 10th year in office, is a resident of East Orange and serves as assistant Essex County administrator. She was recently unsuccessful in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. Assemblyman Thomas Giblin is a labor union officer who resides in Montclair and was first elected to the Assembly in 2005.
Three Republican, who are all from Clifton, are challenging the incumbents. Joseph Cupoli, a business owner, is seeking the Senate seat. Running for the Assembly are Michael Urciuoli, who manages a law office, and David Rios.
