2013 Voter Guide: District 23

Sprawling region likely to see 'red' again as GOP incumbents run in three heavily Republican counties

The sprawling 23rd District includes 35 communities in Hunterdon, Somerset and Warren counties: Alexandria, Alpha, Bedminster, Bethlehem, Bloomsbury, Bound Brook, Bridgewater, Califon, Clinton, Clinton Township, Franklin (Hunterdon), Frenchtown, Glen Gardner, Greenwich, Hackettstown, Hampton, Harmony, High Bridge, Holland, Kingwood, Lebanon Borough and Lebanon Township, Lopatcong, Mansfield, Milford, Peapack-Gladstone, Phillipsburg, Pohatcong, Raritan Borough, South Bound Brook, Tewksbury, Union, Washington Borough and Washington Township.

Voter registration skews Republican, 34 percent of those registered. Democrats comprise 21 percent of those registered, and most of the rest are unaffiliated.

The district is represented by three Republicans and all are seeking re-election. Sen. Michael Doherty, of Oxford, is a patent attorney who has been in the Legislature for almost 14 years, the last five of those in the Senate. His running mates, both of whom were first elected in 2009, are Assemblymen Erik Peterson, a Flemington attorney, and John DiMaio, a contractor from Hackettstown.

A full slate of Democrats is challenging, led by Gerald Bowers, a consultant who lives in Holland Township and is seeking the Senate seat. The Assembly candidates are both from Washington: Ralph Drake, former program director at radio station WNTI, and John Valentine. Daniel Seyler, a Phillipsburg resident and previously unsuccessful candidate, is running as an independent for the Senate seat.
