2013 Voter Guide: District 20

Veteran lawmaker Lesniak tops ballot in district where registration is overwhelmingly Democratic

district 20

District 20 encompasses four communities in Union County: Elizabeth, Hillside, Roselle and Union.

This is one of a handful of districts in which Democrats are actually in the majority, outnumbering even unaffiliated voters. Almost 52 percent of those registered are Democrats and just 7 percent are Republicans.

All three Democrats are running for re-election. State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, an Elizabeth attorney, is one of the longest serving legislators in the state, finishing his 35th year in Trenton, 30 of them in the upper house. Assemblyman Joseph Cryan is a Union County undersheriff who lives in Union and is finishing his sixth term in the lower house. Annette Quijano, a municipal prosecutor from Elizabeth, joined the Assembly in 2008.

The GOP did not field an opponent for Lesniak and an independent candidate who had filed to run has dropped out of the race. There are two Republican challengers for the Assembly seats: Charles Donnelly and Christopher Hackett, both of Union.
