2013 Voter Guide: District 16
Democrat challengers face tough odds in district where non-aligned voters lean toward GOP
District 16 is made up of 14 communities in Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex and Somerset counties: Branchburg, Delaware, Flemington, Hillsborough, Manville, Millstone, Montgomery, Princeton, Raritan, Readington, Rocky Hill, Somerville, South Brunswick and Stockton.
Voter registration leans Democratic -- 28 percent blue and 24 percent red. But the unaffiliateds consistently swing the results to the GOP.
The district is represented by three Republicans, all of whom are seeking re-election. Sen. Christopher “Kip” Bateman, of Neshanic Station, is an attorney finishing his 20th year in the Legislature, having moved up to the Senate in 2008. By contrast, both Assembly members -- Jack Ciattarelli, a publisher from Hillsborough, and Donna Simon, of Whitehouse Station – are completing their first terms.
The Democratic ticket is led by Christian Mastondrea, a Hillsborough attorney seeking the Senate seat. Running for the Assembly are Ida Ochoteco, a small-business owner from Hillsborough, and Marie Corfield, a Flemington teacher making her second try at state legislative office.
