There’s a reason those denture grips and cleansers have so much money for TV advertising. It’s a big market. In New Jersey, 14.2 percent of people over the age of 65 have had all their teeth extracted, according to America’s Health Rankings and the Centers for Disease Control.

Older adults without teeth are at a higher risk for stroke.

New Jersey’s rate of extraction among the elderly, however, is relatively good, as the state ranks 14th. West Virginia (36 percent) and Tennessee (33.7 percent) have the highest rate of seniors without teeth.

Manufacturers of denture grips and cleansers, however, face a shrinking market. The percentage of older adults without teeth is decreasing due to improved oral healthcare, fluoridation, and lack of smoking. What’s more, many dentists now prefer to fit patients with implants.
