There are approximately 1.38 million New Jerseyans -- about 16 percent -- enrolled in Medicare, according to statehealthfacts.org, a project of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, which tracks health statistics by state.
Of those, 86.7 percent are considered "aged" and 13.3 percent are disabled. About 14 percent of Medicare recipients are also enrolled in a supplementary insurance program.
The average spend per enrollee is $11,903. That cost has risen about 6.9 percent annually between 1991 and 2009, the most recent year for which statistics are available.
