$2 million

April 2, 2013

The state Division of Civil Rights helped obtain more than $2 million in settlements over discrimination allegations in 2012.

These included an $83,000 payout from the West New York Board of Education, which was accused of not providing physical access to events and a refusal of re-employment for a disabled teacher's aide; a $50,000 payout as a result of a sexual harassment complaint against Ricochet fitness club in South Plainfield; a $6,000 settlement in favor of an interracial couple who accused a Lodi landlord of housing discrimination: and a $10,000 payout by a Westfield orthopedist who was accused of failing to provide an American Sign Language interpreter to a patient he was treating for spinal pain.

As part of most of these settlements, the division negotiated non-monetary terms such as required training in the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination or the creation of new antidiscrimination policies.
