The state Attorney General's Division of Law, which pursues civil complaints on behalf of the state, obtained settlements and judgments totaling $200 million in 2012.
That sum represents a 44 percent increase – or $61 million – over 2011.
The majority of the settlements and judgements were related to multistate legal actions, most prominently the $72 million New Jersey received as a result of a settlement of foreclosure abuses by the nation's five largest mortgage companies (Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, Citi, and GMAC).
Other settlements included one for $2.4 million for a municipal bonds derivative; $5.3 million against Johnson & Johnson for a multistate investigation of alleged "off-labeling" of the antipsychotic drug Risperdal; and $11.9 million in debt recovery.
