6,000 percent

Looking for a reliable used car? Be wary of buying a flood-salvaged vehicle by way of Hurricane Sandy. The storm resulted in nearly 13,000 – or a 6,000 percent increase -- in the number of flood-damaged and salvaged vehicle titles that have been processed in the past three months.

It is not illegal to sell these vehicles, but sellers must disclose their status to potential purchasers. Any seller that attempts to hide that fact is guilty of fraud.

The state Motor Vehicle Commission is teaming up with the Department of Consumer Affairs on a website that offers a searchable database of flood- and salvage-titled vehicles
