For New Jerseyans, the past week has been all about recovering from Hurricane Sandy, and a big part of that effort has been the 2,100 National Guard dispatched to the state -- tomorrow's veterans, who deserve a special thanks given the holiday we've just celebrated.

Of the soldiers who rode out the storm, 250 were on active duty, but all contributed equally, distributing aid, helping at food banks and shelters, clearing streets, and assisting at the polls.

The search and rescue performed at the advent of the storm was particularly important, noted Gov. Chris Christie, who said 4,000 residents were evacuated by the National Guard. Christie also praised Brigadier General Michael L. Cunniff for being an essential link to resources provided by FEMA and the Department of Defense. Christie said that every time he made a request of Cunniff, the answer was "Yes" or "Give me ten minutes to figure it out."
