6 percent

October 19, 2012

New Jerseyans like to drink alcohol, but not all that much -- given that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says only 6 percent of state residents should be considered "heavy drinkers." These are defined as men who have two or more drinks a day or women who have more than one.

Nevertheless, 61 percent of residents say they've had at least one drink of alcohol within the past 30 days, and 18 percent are considered "binge drinkers," men who have had five or more drinks on one occasion and women who have had more than four.

New Jersey's numbers are about average for the country; the CDC says 6.6 percent of Americans are heavy drinkers, 18 percent are binge drinkers, but only 57 percent drink at all.
