There are 8,606 men and women currently serving in New Jersey’s Army and Air National Guards, which are charged with providing operational forces for rapid civil and military response. Not only do the forces work to safeguard New Jersey bases and equipment, but about 800 of them are on active duty serving in the military.
Of the 8,606 personnel, 6,174 serve in the Army Guard. Of those, about 85 percent are men and 15 percent are women. About 60 percent are white, 19 percent are African-American, 15 percent are Hispanic, and 3 percent are Asian. The Air Guard has a similar racial/ancestral breakdown but a higher percentage are women (19.5 percent.)
