New Jersey does have a large number of successful lawsuits as there were 429 medical malpractice claims paid in New Jersey in 2011, according to statehealthfacts.org, a website run by Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. That ranked New Jersey sixth in the country, while the state ranks 11 in terms of population. Total payout was $164 million payout – an average of $383,437.
New York had the highest number of paid malpractice claims in the country, with 1,379, followed by California (889), Pennsylvania (767), Florida (758) and Texas (445).
