The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regularly inspects nursing homes and assisted living facilities for deficiencies and ProPublica, the national, non-profit investigative news site, has just made it easy to find those reports.
They’ve created a tool that allows you to search for CMS reports by name or location and judge whether infractions at these homes are a result of a pattern or just a one-time occurrence. That’s good news for many of the Garden States facilities, for while there seem to be hundreds of infractions, New Jersey had only 11 serious deficiencies in the past year and half. That compares well with much of the rest of the country. Texas, for instance, had 183; New York, 78; and Oklahoma, 59.
