New Jersey employed 49,419 police employees when accounting for all types of law enforcement agencies, including state, county, municipal and college police, according to NJ Police Employment data.

That was down six percent from 2009, primarily in municipal forces. Although there was a decrease in the number of sworn municipal police, down four percent to 20,552, a greater decrease was experienced by civilian employees.

Of the total police workforce, municipalities employ the largest segment -- 24,605 workers. The number of county police is 8,656; state police is 4,233; University and college police number 810; and all others, such as NJ Transit, the NY/NJ Port Authority total and Department of Corrections, totals 11,115.

In terms of officers per county, it is what one might expect, as Essex employs 3.6 officers per 1,000 residents while Hunterdon and Sussex counties employ the lowest number of officers, 1.3 per 1,000.
