May 4, 2012

Saturday is Cinco de Mayo, the day we in the United States celebrate Mexico and our Mexican friends. And although most of New Jersey’s large Latino population hails from South America, there are 217,715 people of Mexican heritage living in the Garden State, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Of those, about 129,852 were born in Mexico, almost all of whom are over 18 years old and entered the United States after the year 2000. About 59 percent of Mexicans living in New Jersey are male, and the average median age is 31 years old. Only about 25 percent live with nonrelatives or an unmarried partner, with 64 percent having children under the age of 18. About 80 percent of Mexican-New Jerseyans say they speak English less than “very well.”
