Out of 400 fourth-year medical students graduating from UMDNJ this year, about 135 are expected to do their residencies in New Jersey. This statistic is watched closely by medical and educational professionals, because where physicians conduct their residencies often determines where they practice.

Nationally, more than 38,000 students from the U.S., Canada and several other countries competed for 26,772 residency positions this year. Of the 135 students remaining in New Jersey, 93 of them were matched to UMDNJ programs.
