$9.7 million

March 15, 2012

Crime victims were awarded about $9.7 million in compensation by the state in fiscal year 2011. The Victims of Crime Compensation Office, which is a department within the Office of the Attorney General, paid out about $4.95 million for medical and dental services; $2.72 million for economic loss; $1.27 million for funeral/burial services, and $71,000 for counseling. The agency received 3,571 new claims last fiscal year.

New legislation was recently signed by Gov. Chris Christie that will allow crime victims more time to apply for claims, as well as providing for additional benefits. The office is retroactively applying these new rules to active cases.
