A seemingly straightforward bill proves surprisingly controversial.
At first glance, New Jersey's Health Insurance Exchange Act, which is being voted on today, seems like a straightforward idea -- and a good one. It will implement the online marketplaces that will enable individuals, families, and small businesses to buy affordable coverage, as mandated by the federal Affordable Care Act.
But the bill is surprisingly controversial, as Beth Fitzgerald, healthcare writer for NJ Spotlight, discusses with WHYY NewsWorks editor Josh Simeone. For one thing, the insurance companies are unhappy with the makeup of the exchange board, which will decide what insurers can offer coverage. For another, it's unknown what Gov. Chris Christie will do if the bill passes. Meanwhile, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule in June on the constitutionality of ACA itself.
