30 percent

February 9, 2012

Those of us who live in New Jersey are fully aware that we reside in a multicultural state, but it might surprise some to know that about 30 percent of the population says it speaks a language other than English at home, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Indeed, 12.5 percent of the population says it speaks English "less than very well."

Spanish is the most frequently spoken foreign language -- with 15.3 percent of the population speaking it in the home. Other Indo-European languages make up 85 percent of the languages spoken in the home; Asian languages make up about 4.5 percent.

About 20 percent of the country as a whole says it speaks a language other than English at home.
