A total of 17 school trustees -- 14 school board members and three charter school trustees -- have been disqualified from serving on New Jersey Boards of Education based on criminal history record checks that disclosed criminal convictions.

Additionally, there are currently 10 charter school trustees and two school board members who have not cooperated by submitting the necessary fingerprints to conduct a background criminal check. A total of 5,159 school members and charter trustees have had background checks since July 2011, when a new state law requiring the checks went into effect.
